In the Katangese Copperbelt region, a number of conflicts and tensions exist around the governance of natural/mineral resources:
conflicts between mining companies and communities over land and environmental pollution,
conflicts between informal miners and government agencies over access to minerals,
conflicts between mining cooperatives and government services – or between government services - over taxation, between international supply chain initiatives and local stakeholders, and so on.
In this sub-project we focus on governance and security, with the aim of proposing appropriate ‘solutions’ to these conflicts. We use a multidisciplinary lense (law, criminology, economics, social and political sciences, communications sciences) to analyze the ‘real governance’ of mining areas, and co-produce knowledge together with key stakeholders.
We work on different mining sites in Katanga & Lualaba (for instance in Likasi, Lubumbashi, Kipushi, Kolwezi, Kambove, Kawama, Kakanda, …)
