Sub-projects
The aim of the IUC partnership is to improve the socio-ecological living conditions of the KCA population by 2032, thanks to interaction with and academic support from UNILU in the areas of (1) sustainable forestry, (2) optimised environmental and health conditions, (3) good governance of natural resources, (4) formalisation and innovation of entrepreneurial practices and (5) resilient and productive agriculture/food security in the face of productive climate change . In addition, the IUC partnerships aims at creating an environmental observatory for the region within UNILU, able to monitor and provide solutions to problems related to the mining activities in the region.
Therefore, the IUC project is supported by 5 academic sub-projects and 1 transversal sub-project targeting different aspects playing a role in the socio-ecological living condition of the KCA population.
By 2032, local population experiences improved socio-ecological conditions thanks to better governance of ecosystems, natural resources and biodiversty as well as academic support by UNILU.
By 2032, the health of the KCA population is improved through reduced exposure to trace metals (preventive and environmental approach) and interventional care through adapted care (curative approach) in better urbanized cities.
By 2032 the socio-economic and security conditions of ACK communities (mine workers and communities living around mines) have improved, thanks to better governance of the mining sector.

Transform agriculture in KCA to a climate-resilient crop and livestock production system by using natural resources in a sustainable way to achieve long-term food security and safety by 2032.
People training, information, digitalization and infrastructures are improved for an active and efficient university and are adapted so that all the actors of the university community contribute as well as possible to the improvement of the socio-ecological conditions of the inhabitants of the KCA by 2032.
