On April 29th, the Agora at the Diepenbeek campus came alive with color, culture, and connection during our event highlighting the projects with Congo and Tanzania. The afternoon featured a variety of interactive workshops, including "Learn Swahili in 15 Minutes," traditional African board games, bracelet making, and even a hands-on session to build your own solar cooker.
A special part of the program was a series of four PechaKucha presentations, in which 2 PhD students, Gyrhaiss Kadembele & Sylvain Balume Baderha of UNILU presented their research in a dynamic and accessible format. They did an excellent job translating complex topics into clear and engaging stories for a broad audience.
Guests were also treated to a delicious array of food and drinks, with contributions from both enthusiastic students and a Congolese restaurant based in Hasselt. It was a vibrant celebration of international collaboration, creativity, and community spirit.
Here are a few photos capturing the atmosphere of the day 👉
We’re proud to present a powerful new photo essay created by PhD student Hadassah Arian in collaboration with photographer Nathan Bushiru. Over the past few months, they have documented the realities of cobalt mining in Kolwezi, offering a striking visual narrative that captures both human stories and broader social dynamics.
The book is currently available in English, with a French translation coming soon.
